Alright, guys, let’s talk about what I did today. I got my hands dirty trying to remake a Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119G-001, the original order. You know, that really fancy watch everyone’s been talking about.
First off, I started by digging around for info on this watch. It is a classic style. I checked out some websites, like Chrono24, where they sell all sorts of luxury watches. I found out that the 6119G-001 is a 39mm white gold piece, pretty slick if you ask me. And it’s not waterproof, just up to 3 ATM, so don’t go swimming with it.
Then I got into the details. This watch has a manual winding movement, which is kind of old school but cool. I read that it’s got this guilloched hobnail pattern, also known as Clous de Paris. Sounds fancy, right? It’s a detail that Patek Philippe added to give the Calatrava a fresh look, and they also made the diameter a bit bigger.
- Looked up the price – retail is around $33,110. Sheesh!
- Found it on the pre-owned market for about $26,278. Still pricey!
- Learned that it’s a current production model, so it’s not like it’s some vintage thing you can’t get anymore.
I spent some time thinking about whether this watch is worth the money. I mean, it’s a status symbol and all that, but is it practical? Probably not for everyday wear, but it is a personal decision.
My Remake Attempt
So, I decided to try and remake it. Of course, I’m not using real gold or anything, just trying to get the look and feel right. I started with the case, trying to mimic that 39mm size and the white gold look. Let me tell you, it’s not easy.
Next, I focused on the dial. Getting that guilloched pattern right was a real pain. I tried a few different techniques, but it’s tough to replicate that kind of detail without the proper tools. I also tried to get that hands and other details but it was too difficult to match.
The movement was the hardest part. I mean, I’m not a watchmaker, so I couldn’t make a real manual winding movement. I settled for a simple quartz movement just to get the hands moving. But hey, it’s all about the learning process, right?
After a lot of trial and error, I finally finished my remake. It’s not perfect, far from it, but it looks somewhat like the 6119G-001. At least from a distance. And I only spent a fraction of the price. I will continue to try to refine my remake version of this watch. Maybe I will success next time.
Honestly, this whole thing made me appreciate the craftsmanship of real luxury watches even more. It’s crazy how much work goes into them. If you ever get the chance to see one of these watches in person, take a good look. You’ll be amazed.
